Description
The Works Progress Administration built a Highway 9 underpass in Carnegie, OK.
Contributor note: “This pedestrian underpass is located on the southwest corner of Broadway and E. 4th Street (State Highway 9). An elementary school is located on the south end, and a residential area on the north. The underpass goes north-south under E. 4th Street.
The exposed entrances are built of concrete and stone, and have been painted red and white. The WPA shield showing the year 1936 was worked into the concrete alongside the stairwell on both sides of the road. The underpass was clear and appears to be still used by students and citizens of Carnegie.”

I used this Underpass regularly as a boy, going to and from that old red brick school house. I’m sure a lot of folks never knew there ever was an old red brick school house up there. That was over 70 years ago. I’m glad to see that old underpass is standing the test of time.
