Description

The 1935 Guadalupe County Courthouse is the third courthouse for Guadalupe County. The Public Works Administration funded building was designed by L.M. Wirtz in the Moderne architectural style and is constructed of concrete, steel and smooth sandstone.

    It’s 1936.

    And here Wirtz shared credit with his young partner Harold Calhoun.

    Not Art Moderne. Deco has symmetrical facade with door in middle, Moderne is off-center. Deco has strong vertical (or, zig zag, lines) while Moderne is horizontal. Deco has bas relief panels, as here, Justice and Wisdom carved by Calhoun, and pylons to give vertical emphasis.
