Covered Reservoir – Beverly MA

Description

Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) workers constructed a covered reservoir in Beverly, Massachusetts. The status and exact location of the project is unknown to Living New Deal. From a W.P.A. Bulletin:

Now near completion, the Beverly WPA Concrete-Covered Reservoir Project, connected with the present pipe distribution system, completely surrounded with an earth embankment and featuring a driveway over its top, has a capacity of 2,800,000 gallons.

I think this is at the top of Brimbal Hills Drive; Former site of NIKE missile command and control and now (since 1993 I think) the site of Beverly’s water tower. The covered reservoir is still intact (water tower is adjacent) but I assume disconnected from water supply? We used to play up there when I was a kid and I remember a guy that used to plow the access road telling us it was an underground reservoir that stored million of gallons. There are still vents and manholes there and the top of it is highest point in Beverly I believe,
