The photo shows a stone masonry camp stove, aka “Diablo Stove.” There are 25 stone camp and picnic stoves and barbecues at CBPSP (not to mention a bridge and culverts) built by the CCC from 1933 to 1941. The CCCs worked at Big Trees in the Summer and at Mt. Diablo SP in the Winter, hence the name. This stove with a chimney damper and sliding grill covers was designed for snow country, though, so it should be called the “Big Trees Stove.” Most of these historic landscape elements at Big Trees have been restored and are still in use.
