Description

According to the West Virginia Department of Commerce:

“Cacapon Resort State Park was the first CCC state park to be completed. Camp Morgan was established October 4, 1934 in what is now the main picnic area in the park. The land was devastated by clear-cutting of the timber and by poor agricultural practices of small subsistence farmers during the Great Depression. The men were responsible for the construction of 27 miles of roads and trails within the park, bath house, lake, dam and beach, picnic areas and shelters, stables, supply house, staff residences and rental cabins. The 12-room Old Inn was the first lodge in the WV Park system.”

And, according to the park’s official website:

“The Ole’ Inn at Cacapon State Park was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and was the first overnight accommodating lodge in the West Virginia State Park System. This impressive 12-room inn recaptures a Colonial atmosphere with exterior boards and batten construction, interior hand hewn log beams, and guest rooms have tongue and groove walls of wormy-chestnut and knotty pine. Low ceiling, stone chimneys, and wrought iron hardware add to the historical flavor of The Ole’ Inn.”

  1. I am from Virginia and as a child went to Lake Cacapon during the summer months with my family. I cannot find a picture anywhere of the Old Bath House. I have copies of the beach, also pictures of family and friends on the beach, but do not have one of the bath house itself. I remember things like getting a basket for your clothes. A corresponding number of a pin was attached to put on your swim suit so your clothes could be retrieved after a fun day at the beach. Does anyone know where I can find a picture of this old bath house?? Thx. Mt. View, CA

My father was in the CCC and he helped to build the bath houses! I would love to see a picture of them myself. 🙂

    • Rebecca,

I live nearby in Berkeley Springs (though I am away at Cornell Univ. right now) and I absolutely love Cacapon. I have hiked nearly all of the trails, and the lake and picnic areas are great places to hang out on the weekend. I play in the Morgan Community Concert Band at Cacapon for their Independence Day concert. The original inn and bathhouse are gorgeous buildings.
