  • Water Storage Tanks - Long Beach CA
These storage tanks were built under the New Deal in the 1930s. They may be the tanks near the intersection of Redondo Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway—this half mile section of PCH was graded and paved under a federal grant in 1935—but confirmation is needed.
  • Morgan Hill Waterworks - Santa Clara CA
Exact location of water tower unknown.
  • Rock Walls - Stanislaus County CA
According to a report from the regional office in 1940, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) had recently constructed rock walls in Stanislaus County, California. Unfortunately, nothing more specific is known about this project, neither the location nor the purpose of the walls.  WPA reports could be maddeningly vague about some of their minor projects.
  • Bryant Elementary School - San Francisco CA
The Public Works Administration (PWA) funded construction of the Buena Vista Elementary School (now Bryant Elementary) in the 1930s.  We believe that the New Deal building is still in place. A record card for the project in the National Archives states that it included, "18 classrooms. A 'health' school. 'Various ailments' 'Special type of design suitable for the status of children's houses.' Near Sunshine School and General Hospital." (NARA) More information is needed on this site. The exact cost is unknown because this was one of a group of school projects in San Francisco for which the PWA laid out almost $3 million.
  • Baseball Field Bleachers - Sonora CA
The Works Progress Administration (WPA) built bleachers for a baseball field in Sonora, California.  This field is part of a larger group of athletic fields behind the building know as "The Dome", a former elementary school building, long abandoned, that sits prominently on a hill in Sonora.   The WPA bleachers include a stone retaining wall with stairs and a long, stone drinking fountain.  We do not know the exact date of this work, which is unmarked. The playing field are used by several schools in the area and the bleachers and ballfield sit directly behind and below a building occupied by...

  • Edward Vincent Jr. Park - Inglewood CA
Otherwise known as Centinela Park. The WPA built the park's water fountain and eight tennis courts in the 1930s. Other structures may have been built at that time too--more documentation is needed. From an article in Inglewood Today: "Archibald Garner was also  commissioned to create the water fountain monument at the outcropping of the springs in then Centinela Park, now Vincent Park.  The fountain was originally designed to provide water for adults, children, and dogs... Garner chose granite for his sculpture.  It is made of chunks of stone of various sizes, placed irregularly to form a low column with a polished...
  • City Hall - Lake Elsinore CA
The older part of the Lake Elsinore CA City Hall is a New Deal structure.   It was undoubtedly paid for by the Public Works Administration (PWA), but this needs to be verified. A more recent addition to the city hall has been added on one side of the original building.
