Louis A Simon - Supervising Architect Sites

This New Deal post office in Nazareth was built in 1936. Louis A. Simon served as the Supervising Architect and Neal A. Melick as the Supervising Engineer.

The post office in Orange, Virginia was constructed in 1935 with Treasury Department funds. It is also the site of Arnold Friedman's 1937 mural, "Upland Pastures," painted for the Treasury Section of Fine Arts. Louis A. Simon was the Supervising Architect and Neal A. Melick was the Supervising Engineer.

The Oxnard Post Office was built by the Treasury Department Bureau of Public Buildings in 1939.  It is a two story building in Italian Renaissance Revival style.  It is still in active use and the original lobby is intact.

The historic post office building in Perry, Oklahoma was constructed with federal Treasury Department funds. The building, which was completed in 1939, is still in use today. A New Deal mural that had been housed in the post office lobby has since been relocated to a nearby museum.

The historic New Deal post office in Santa Paula, California was constructed with Treasury Department funds. It was built to the same specifications as the post office in Huntington Beach, which was built the same year. Construction of the building is sometimes mis-attributed to the WPA.

The historic post office building in Spencer, Indiana was constructed with New Deal funds in 1938. It is still in use today.

The historic post office in Upper Sandusky, Ohio was constructed in 1935 with federal Treasury Department funds, under  architect John Moore. The post office is a typical depression era building with Colonial Revival details. It rests side gabled along the street with a four sided lantern topped with a weathervane centered on the roof. Built of brick with four bays and a central door. The windows large wooded are 12 over 12 double hung. The entrance is a double glass door. The building cost $85,000. It was dedicated on July 4, 1941 by Brig General Lewis B. Hersey, acting national director of the selective service, speakers also included Smith W. Purdum, assistant postmaster general. The historic post office in Wewoka, Oklahoma was constructed with federal Treasury Department funds. The building, which houses New Deal artwork inside, was completed in 1935 and is still in use today.

The New Deal post office in Whittier, California, was constructed in 1935 with federal Treasury Department funds. It was designed by R. L. Warren, with Louis A. Simon, one of the Roosevelt Administration's chief New Deal architects, serving as Supervising Architect. Neal A. Melick served as Supervising Engineer. The building is still in service, but the New Deal mural has been painted over during renovations.  

"When construction was completed in 1940, Crossett reveled in the addition of the 'pleasing green' stucco building that was designed using a combination of Art Deco, Greek Revival, and International architectural syles" (Arkansas Historic Preservation Program). An excellent example of a Moderne style post office of the 1930s, the structure contains an intact mural by regional painter Alexandre Hogue. The edifice was designed by U.S. Treasury architect Louis A. Simon. Its distinctive features include decorative aluminum grillwork, sculptural metal lights and Zig-Zag Art Moderne stone friezes. This colorful post office was built in 1934 by the Treasury Department. It is a one-story hollow tile construction with a basement. It has modified Mission-style arches, relief ornamentation and entablature with finials over front entrance, double-leaf front doors, transom covered by row of turned spindles, two gabled skylights. The contractor was Robert E. McKee of El Paso. The building is still standing but was discontinued as post office in mid-1970s. As of Summer 2012, the building is vacant and up for sale.

The historic Vacaville Post Office was constructed during the Great Depression but is now privately owned. The New Deal mural still decorates the walls.

This New Deal post office is now the Cabrillo College Watsonville Center.

Nome, Alaska's old post office and courthouse was constructed with federal Treasury Department funds and opened in 1938. The building, which still stands, is located along Front Street adjacent to Federal Way. It has since been heavily modified and is privately owned.

The U.S. Treasury Department built the Santa Clara post office in 1935.  The building style is Mission Revival, which was popular for houses and civic buildings during the interwar period. It is also the site of Michael von Meyer's 1937 wood carving, "Early Pioneers," available for view in the library.
