Kansas City Bridge Company Sites

The construction of the westbound span of this bridge taking Highway 40 (Interstate 64) over the Missouri River was funded by the Public Works Administration in 1935. The Kansas City Bridge Company was the contractor of record. The eastbound span was built in 1989. The original Depression-era span was demolished in the 2016 and replaced.

The northbound I-74 bridge, a.k.a. Iowa-Illinois Memorial Bridge, was constructed as a Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) project. The P.W.A. supplied a $1,124,000 loan and $403,400 grant for the project, whose total cost was $1,471,244. Construction occurred between June 1934 and November 1936. The South Omaha Veterans Memorial Bridge (originally the South Omaha Bridge) was constructed during the Great Depression with the aid of federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds. Demolished in 2010, construction occurred between 1934 and 1936. The PWA supplied a $1,325,000 loan and $405,293 grant for the project, whose total cost was $1,735,910. PWA Docket No. NE 22.

SH 78 bridge at Red River is the only surviving K-Truss bridge in Texas. It has an overall length of 2,108 feet, and provides a crossing between Fannin County, Texas and Bryan County, Oklahoma. The "eight riveted K-truss through spans, with two camelback pony truss spans at each end" (Lauderdale, 1996) was a joint project between the Texas Highway Department and the Oklahoma Highway Commission. Primarily designed by OHC engineers, the K-Truss is "meant to afford greater span length and strength" (Jensen).
