• Bryant Elementary School - San Francisco CA
    The Public Works Administration (PWA) funded construction of the Buena Vista Elementary School (now Bryant Elementary) in the 1930s.  We believe that the New Deal building is still in place. A record card for the project in the National Archives states that it included, "18 classrooms. A 'health' school. 'Various ailments' 'Special type of design suitable for the status of children's houses.' Near Sunshine School and General Hospital." (NARA) More information is needed on this site. The exact cost is unknown because this was one of a group of school projects in San Francisco for which the PWA laid out almost $3 million.

  • Lawton School - San Francisco CA
    This K-8 school is now known as the Lawton Alternative School. The PWA built both the elementary school (with 18 classrooms) and the Kindergarten portions of the school, as well as an auditorium with 350 seats.
  • Samuel Gompers Trade School - San Francisco CA
    2nd of 5 proposed units. The Daily Pacific Builder of October 3, 1938 reported that an architect was wanted for this project which had been awarded $190,000 in PWA money.
  • Sunshine School - San Francisco CA
    This school was originally built for children with physical disabilities. It later became a continuation high school, and currently houses the SFUSD Cal-SAFE program, the Hilltop School, and various community agencies. At the time of its construction, it housed 18 classrooms, a courtyard and a therapeutic bathing pool. It was situated near Buena Vista Elementary School, which was also designed for children with various health ailments.
