  • Rockville Stone Chapel - Fairfield CA
    A WPA plaque hanging in front of the chapel building reads: "This Historic Monument Erected A.D. 1856 by Solano County Pioneers. Reconstructed by Federal Works Agency, Work Projects Administration A.D. 1940" A nearby California Historical Marker no. 779 highlights this structure and reads: "Erected by pioneers of Methodist Episcopal Church South with volunteer labor and donated funds. Cornerstone laid October 3, 1856. Dedicated February 1857. Site supplied by Landy and Sarah Alford. Chapel deteriorated by 1929 and deeded by the church to Rockville Public Cemetery District as a pioneer monument. Restored in 1940." -------------------- This chapel is currently home to the Church of Christ.
  • Franklin Canyon Park: Road Wall - Beverly Hills CA
    In 1940, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) built a lengthy ~0.3-mile wall along part of the road which surrounds the Upper Franklin Canyon Reservoir in Franklin Canyon Park, Beverly Hills, CA. When driving north along the east side of the reservoir, the wall is to your left. Plaques at the north and south ends of the wall read "Built by United States Work Projects Administration 1940."

    Before turning off onto the main road that enters Okmulgee State Park, be sure follow state road 56 until you come to the spillway cascade. The Okmulgee Spillway, built in 1939-1940 by the Work Projects Administration, sits at the northeastern most point of the Lake Okmulgee Dam. The 40-foot-high by 250-foot- long cascade which is being nominated, is a series of upwardly rising limestone steps which buttress the original 1927-28 spiliway (built by a private contractor), on the dry side of the dam.     The first school in the community of Lavon was a two-story brick building. In 1910, the Little Creek school, which was organized in 1885, closed and transferred to the Lavon School District No. 135. Between 1938 and 1940, the school building for the Lavon Independent School District was built through the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt with the passage of the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act of 1935, the WPA was to be an extension of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration Work Program which funded projects at the state and local level.   • Post Office - Hereford TX
    This historic post office in Hereford, Texas was constructed with Treasury Department funds in 1939-40. The building, which houses an example of New Deal artwork, has since been extended. It is still in service.

  • College of Charleston Student Activities Building/Gymnasium - Charleston SC
    On 27 October 1937, the Radcliffe-King House was pulled down for the new College of Charleston Student Activities Building/Gymnasium building. The new building was funded by the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works, and was designed by Simons & Lapham, a well known Charleston, South Carolina architectural firm, which participated in may New Deal projects. The building included some rooms for dorms for out of county basketball players who attended the    College of Charleston.     The Work Projects Administration (WPA) built the office of the West Virginia Road Commission in Buckhannon. A building plaque states that the project was built by the WPA in 1940 and sponsored by the State Road commission of West Virginia. The gable stone inset bearing the 1939 date suggests that construction begun that year and was completed sometime in 1940. The parcel is listed as district 02, map 2, parcel 19, although parcels 17 and 18 located behind the site are also now state property.
