  • School Mural (Missing) - Cape Elizabeth ME
    A 1940 WPA report on the activities of Professional and Service Projects in Maine mentioned the completion of a mural for the former Cape Elizabeth High School. Dorothy Higgins of the Cape Elizabeth Historical Preservation Society Cape happened to locate a picture of it in the 1941 High School year book. "The high school has been remodeled several times and no one at the Cape Elizabeth Historical Preservation Society knows what happened to this mural." It depicts a map of the town flanked by small illustrations of historical buildings.
  • Fairland School (former) - Marble Falls TX
    The Works Progress Administration built a two-room schoolhouse in the Fairland community near Marble Falls, Texas. The rock masonry building was completed by February 1940 under official project number 665-66-2-485. The building is currently a private residence.
  • San Joaquin Experimental Range - Friant CA
    "The San Joaquin Experimental Range (SJER) was established in 1934 and was California's first range research station. It was originally conceived as a cooperative interdisciplinary research center to identify cost-effect methods of commercial livestock production in the annual grass-oak pine woodlands, while maintaining the integrity of the ecosystem.   • Public School - Kendalia TX
    The Commissioner's court minutes of 1939 show that the Kendalia RCSD#14 was authorized to issue $2500.00 of school bonds to build a new school building. In 1940 the old frame school house was replace with a 3 room native rock school constructed by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) for $2500.00 and classes were held in the new building starting in the fall of 1940. The Kendalia Mother's Club was responsible for the fund raising and construction of a small cafeteria that served the students of the new rock school building.   • Jefferson Hospital (former) - Birmingham AL
    The 16-story Jefferson Hospital was completed in 1940 and opened in February 1941. Financed with a PWA grant and Reconstruction Finance Loans, the 575-bed hospital had 11 operating rooms, maternity section and all-electric kitchens. It was renamed Jefferson Tower in 1979 and is part of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center.
  • Football Field - Wortham TX
    The index card text: 7' rock masonry fence around football field. Rock masonry stands with timber seats. Ticket office rock masonry with concrete floor. Playing field - grading - fills - drainage and sodding. Replace lighting system from old location. The 7' fence around the field and two ticket offices (one at each entrance) still exist. The stands have been replaced with new metal ones. The lighting system also appears newer.
  • City Hall (old Post Office) - Belmont NC
    The Treasury Department funded the construction of the Post Office in Belmont, NC. The structure was built in 1939 and today serves as the city hall. A mural titled "Mayor Chronicle's South Fork Boys" was painted by Peter DeAnna in 1940 for the Treasury Section of Fine Arts. In 1973, the building use changed and the facility became the Belmont City Hall. The structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
  • Alice Savage Elementary - Red Oak OK
    The Works Progress Administration built the Alice Savage Elementary in Red Oak. Contributor note: "The Alice Savage Elementary School, located on North Main is a one-story coursed native sandstone building, with a flat roof on the classroom section and a barrel roof over the gymnasium which is connected perpendicularly to the rear of the school. The school contains 10 or more classrooms, and was built in 1939-1940. The front of the school has two double-door entrances recessed beneath arched openings.     This classic Post Office building was constructed in 1940. "An article from the Mountain Democrat quotes Postmaster Joseph Scherer as having receipts of $28,928 for 1936 — an increase of more than a thousand dollars. “This continuing increase is a good argument for a new post office building,” the newspaper proclaimed.
