  • School - Meriden KS
    A school construction project in Meriden, Kansas was undertaken as a federal Public Works Administration (PWA) project. The PWA provided an $16,200 grant for the project, whose total cost was $35,920. Construction started in Dec. 1938 and was completed in Oct. 1939. The status and location of the project are presently unknown to Living New Deal. PWA Docket No. Kan. 1410.
  • Worth County Courthouse Development - Northwood IA
    The county courthouse was built in 1893. The Works Progress Administration enlarged and remodeled the facility in 1939. One Romanesque tower was completely replaced.
  • Owl Spring Outhouses - Box Elder County UT
    Several outhouses in Grouse Creek were erected by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1939. The outhouses feature inscriptions in their cement foundations.
  • Post Office (former) - Morrisville PA
    The historic former post office building in Morrisville, Pennsylvania houses an example of New Deal artwork: "Canal Era," a mural by Yngve Soderberg. The work was completed and installed in 1939.
  • Mount Hope Farm Improvements - Bristol RI
    As attested to by multiple plaques on-site, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) installed drainage channels with culverts for walking trails at Mount Hope Farm in Bristol, Rhode Island, and potentially made other improvements.
  • Canoga Park High School: Melcher Painting - Canoga Park CA
    In 1939, artist George Henry Melcher completed an oil on canvas painting titled "Across the Lagoon, Malibu" for Canoga Park High School in Canoga Park, CA. Located in the school's Board Room, the painting depicts an ocean lagoon, with small green islets scattered in the bay. It is framed in a wood frame measuring 36-1/2 x 30-1/4 inches. A label on the back reads: "Federal Art Project, FAP #8864, 'Across the Lagoon, Malibu', Artist: Geo. H. Melcher, BCVD 8/14/39 24 x 30".
  • Robert E. Peary Middle School: Van Halle Painting - Gardena CA
    In 1939, artist Francis J. Van Halle completed an oil on canvas painting titled "Chrysanthemums" for Robert E. Peary Middle School (formerly Gardena High School) in Gardena, CA. Located in Stephan Hall, the painting depicts a vase of chrysanthemums on a stone ledge against a brown background. It is framed in a painted and gilt frame measuring 37.25 x 23.5 inches. A partial paper label is affixed to the reverse with artist’s name, title, numbered “#44” and inscribed “Federal Art Proj.”
  • High School (former) Addition - Danbury CT
    A high school addition project was undertaken in Danbury as a federal Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) project. Living New Deal believes this to be Danbury's former high school, now known as White Hall or Ives Concert Hall. Located at the northeast corner of White Street and 5th Avenue, the building was originally constructed in 1925. The P.W.A. supplied a $52,600 grant for the project, whose total cost was $583,095. Construction occurred between Aug. 1938 and Apr. 1939. P.W.A. Docket No. CT 1258
  • Library (demolished) - Columbiana OH
    The Public Works Administration contributed $7,605 towards the construction of a library in Columbiana. The building was designed by Frank Smith of Youngstown and built by J.G. Madden & Sons of East Palestine. The building has since been demolished.
