Completion Year: 1938

The Public Works Administration (PWA) provided $1,018,811 for a chemistry building at Howard University.  It was one of four buildings funded by PWA on the campus, including the Founders Library, built c. 1937-38. The chemistry building was built in brick Georgian style, with limestone trim. It was almost surely designed by Albert I. Cassell, an African American architect who did several of the buildings at Howard.  It still serves as the home of the Department of Chemistry.  

The Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed the Doyle Drive approach to the Golden Gate Bridge (not itself a New Deal project).  This roadway carried traffic from city streets in the Marina District through the Presidio of San Francisco, which at the time was still a U.S. Army base and headquarters of the 6th Army.   The project included, besides the roadway itself, the carrying of underground electricity, telephone, sewer and water lines. The New Mexico State Fairgrounds opened at its current location in 1937. In addition to buildings, we should look to New Deal programs for basic infrastructure such as exterior walls, gates and landscaping. Construction of the Roosevelt County Courthouse and Jail was undertaken as a New Deal project during the Great Depression. Sometimes mis-attributed to the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.), the building was actually a Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) project. The P.W.A. supplied an $89,173 grant for the building's construction; total cost of the project was $197,381. Construction occurred between 1937 and 1938/9. P.W.A. Docket No. N.M. 1024-D.S.

The historic Burley post office houses an example of New Deal artwork: an oil-on-canvas mural entitled "Pioneers on the Oregon Trail along the Snake River," painted by Elizabeth Lochrie in 1938. The work was commissioned by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts.

The historic New Deal post office in Auburn, Nebraska contains a Treasury Section of Fine Arts mural entitled “Threshing” painted by Ethel Magafan in 1938. She also painted a mural for the Wynne, Arkansas and Madill, OK post offices. "Ethel Magafan, the artist who created this mural, studied at Colorado Springs Fine Art Center at the same time as Nebraska muralist Edward Chavez. Her sister Jenne also painted a Nebraska mural for the town of Albion. Ethel was in her early twenties when she painted this mural. The Post Office in Black River Falls WI was constructed by the Treasury Department in 1938.

"The largest Public Works Administration (PWA) project in Wisconsin was construction of the City of Milwaukee Linwood water filtration plant, which employed 1,700 men for a year." (www4.uwm.edu) "Due to increasing pollution of Lake Michigan the amount of chemicals required to make the water safe for use had become excessive. The city constructed this new plant on 'made land' on the shore and it has a capacity of 200,000,000 gallons daily. The Public Works Administration and the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works funded the construction of the school building and athletic facilities for the Village School in Cabot, Cabot School District. "The school is in the residential section of the town and replaces an inadequate two-story condemned wooden building. There are five classrooms, a library, domestic science room, principal's office, and teachers' rooms. The walls are insulated. It was completed in October 1938. This New Deal post office was built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1938. It is also the site of William Caffee's 1941 mural, "Chesapeake Fisherman." Researcher Frank da Cruz notes that the post office's Colonial Revival design is by Louis A. Simon who was the Supervising Architect in the U.S. Department of the Treasury at the time.
