  • Post Office (former) - Lufkin TX
"It is an excellent example of Neo-Classical architecture in a small Federal building. The simple brick building exhibits the Greek elements of Doric columns supporting an unenriched architrave at its main entry. Built in 1935 under the auspices of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Louis Simon, Supervising Architect. After the passage of the Public Buildings Act of 1926, there was an increase in the construction of Federal Buildings in the United States. Public building construction was expanded in the 1930s to provide jobs during the Depression. It was during this period that the courthouse was built. Originally designed for use...

  • East Chicago Public Library: Kasas Mural - East Chicago IN
Ernest Kasas painted the mural titled "The Gift Of The Book To Mankind" at the East Chicago Public Library. While sources attribute the work to the Federal Art Project, the date (1934-35) is too early for that program; so it is probable that the work was actually commissioned under the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP). The history and characteristics of the mural are described by the East Chicago Public Library: "The mural on the back wall over the Reference Desk at the Pastrick Branch was painted by Ernest Kasas of Indiana Harbor (East Chicago), as a WPA (The Works Progress Administration) Arts...

There are quite a few picnic tables and other amenities which were built in the mid-1930's by the Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) in this municipal park. The Oklahoma Historical Society database shows that this project had an appropriation of $6800 and was completed in November 1935. The park is a long, narrow grass area primarily serving as a picnic and playground area. There was once a WPA-constructed rock sign near the north of the...
