• Bennett School: Dahlstrom Mural - Chicago IL
    The Bennett School contains this WPA mural "History of Books" by Gustaf Dahlstrom, a 4'6" x 70' oil on canvas frieze in 15 sections. The frieze was restored in 2000.
  • Green Bay Pavillion Mural and Sculptures - Highland Park IL
    Gustaf Dahlstrom's panel oil-on-plaster mural "Flora and Fauna," as well two carved wood bas relief sculptures: "Wild Animals" and "Farm Animals" (artist unknown) were each completed in 1938 with funds provided by the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. The are all viewable in room 106 of the Green Bay Pavilion.

    Gustaf Dahlstrom painted two 9' x 26' murals for the Laurel School: "Gardening" and "Animals and Flowers." They were completed with WPA Federal Art Project funds in 1938. They were moved to the Harper School from the Laurel School in 1973.

    “The Great Indian Council 1833” is a mural painted by Gustaf Dalstrom, who was a Swedish-American artist that attended the Art Institute of Chicago and at one point was the President of the Chicago Society of Arts. Dalstrom painted many murals for the Treasury Department Section of Painting and Sculpture as known as The Treasury Section of Fine Arts. “The Great Indian Council 1833” was originally painted for the Post Office at 840 North Clark Street where it hung from 1938 (year it was finished) until 1983 when the Post Office was converted to a movie theater.     These three murals by Gustaf Dahlstrom - "Fall," "Winter" and "Summer," each about 12'7" h x 9'8"w - were found in 1996 during a lead abatement program. Restored in 2002, they had been painted over three times.

    The two panels of this mural titled "History of Transportation" are part of a 31' long panorama originally installed at Lawson School. The mural was painted by Gustaf Dahlstrom with support from the WPA's Federal Art Project.

    Gustaf Dahlstrom painted this oil on canvas mural, entitled "Illinois Farm," in 1936, for the Treasury Section of Fine Arts. It is viewable in the lobby of the Gillespie post office.
  • Post Office Murals - St. Joseph MO
    The post office contains a series of frescoes by artist Gustaf Dahlstrom. The murals were funded by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts in 1941. This large set of frescoes was executed by a master of the technique and depicted the rich history of St. Joseph, MO. Blacks are prominently represented, though it is primarily in stereotypical rolls of laborers and singing and dancing. There are some significant condition issues and partial repairs. Gustaf Dahlstrom was born in Gotland, Sweden and immigrated to the United States. He lived primarily in Chicago and worked at the Field Museum documenting wildlife displays.
