Farmington Sites

Multiple New Deal agencies worked to develop a former municipal airport in Farmington, Maine. The Farmington airport was initially a FERA/MERA project as part of a state wide airport building program. It was built as a North/South 2000x100' graded runway, open about June 15, 1934. According to the town report, one of the several projects the New Deal completed in Farmington was work on Bailey Hill Rd. in 1939. The historic post office in Farmington, Maine was constructed between 1935 and 1936 with federal Treasury Department funds. The building, which houses an example of New Deal artwork inside, is still in use today.

The historic post office in Farmington, Maine houses an example of New Deal artwork: a Treasury of Fine Arts-commissioned wooden relief entitled "Lillian Nordica." Created by Hetty Beatty, the work was installed in the post office lobby in 1938. "Nordica was born in Farmington in 1857. She became a foremost soprano Opera signer in the late 19th, early 20th centuries."

1934 Report of Superintendent of Schools: "At West Farmington, Farmington Falls, Fairbanks School and the Red School, grading was done, the labor for which was paid by the Federal Government, but the material was furnished by the School Department. This is responsible for most of the deficit in the Repair Account. In addition to grading the grounds at the Red School, a new fence was built and the roof of the schoolhouse was shingled." The Red School House survived and was moved to the county fair grounds in 2007.
