Fort Scott Sites

"This new school replaces two obsolete buildings approximately 50 years old. It is part one and part two stories in height and provides eight standard classrooms, two primary classrooms, a principal's office, a teachers' room, a workroom, and the auditorium which has a well-equipped stage and a kitchen. The building is semifireproof. Its exterior walls are red face brick trimmed with stone and the cupola is wood. It was completed in June 1935 at a construction cost of $157,116 and a project cost of $190,640."

The Work projects Administration (WPA) conducted improvement work at the military installation at Fort Scott in Kansas. This Post Office and former Courthouse was completed by the Treasury Department in 1936. Today it is only a post office.

Oscar E. Berninghaus painted this Section of Fine Arts oil-on-canvas mural entitled "Border Gateways" in 1937 in the Fort Scott federal courthouse. As of 2007, the federal court room was empty. Access was possible with permission from the post office, housed downstairs. This work is a placid scene showing settlers travelling into the Kansas Territory as a result of the “Enabling Act of Kansas Territory” in 1854. There appear to be rows of newly cut wheat and Native Americans looking on the settlers at the front left, with cavalry at the front right. A stagecoach is in the background, possibly the...
