Montrose Sites

"The Black Canyon of the Gunnison was established as a U.S. National Monument on March 2, 1933. It became a National Park on October 21, 1999. During 1933-35, the Civilian Conservation Corps built the North Rim Road to design by the National Park Service. This includes fives miles of roadway and five overlooks; it is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places as a historic district."   (https://www.hipcamp.com) Funding was provided by the PWA and Emergency Conservation Work.

The Works Progress Administration (WPA) built a county jail in Montrose, CO. The two-story structure was built of store quarried locally. The federal expenditure was $18,514. Local sponsors contributed an additional $9,348. While not still in use the building, which bears a 1936 inscription and a plaque crediting the WPA with its construction, still stands. The plaque reads: Erected through the cooperation of federal, state and local governments by Works Progress Administration Dedicated to the enrichment of human lives A record of permanent achievement

"The original historic log ranger station was constructed between 1916 and 1936, on the rim of the Uncompahgre Plateau west of Montrose. Originally it had a living room, kitchen, hall, and two bedrooms. The structure burned down in 1977, but the new modern Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) cabin and garage build in 1936 still remain. The property includes a log cabin and a picturesque barn and pastures. The Silesca Ranger Station’s significance is manifested in the materials and construction style of the structures present in the surrounding landscape. Silesca reflects the regional style mandated by the Forest Service for woodland areas during the CCC-era. ...
