    The Works Progress Administration built seven miles of sidewalks throughout the City of Atmore. This work was part of a WPA city-wide, sidewalk construction program. Pictured are WPA workers carrying out sidewalk construction work on U.S. Highway 31. The approximate cost of the entire program was $8,100.00.

  • Interstate Highway 11 Improvements - Atmore AL
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) built a one-mile portion of State Highway 11 in the vicinity of Atmore. The highway facilitated agricultural trade across the border with Florida and it was graveled and asphalted by the WPA. Pictured is a portion of the new highway section built by the WPA.
  • Post Office - Atmore AL
    The historic post office in Atmore, Alabama was constructed in 1935 with federal Treasury Department funds. The building, which houses an example of New Deal artwork, is still in use today.
  • Post Office Mural - Atmore AL
    This Section of Fine Arts mural entitled “The Letter Box” was painted in 1938 by Anne Goldthwaite. Goldthwaite, a Montgomery artist, used the suggested Section theme of postal history for both of her Alabama murals, this one and her panel in Tuskegee. In this panel she shows a group of rural children eagerly gathering to await the daily mail delivery. (Alabama Moments)
