Description
“Built in the 1920s, the renovated hospital campus contains more than a hundred contemporary and historical public artworks. The entryway to the main building displays five murals by WPA [Works Progress Administration] artist Glen Wessels. The WPA inspired three contemporary mosaic murals in the lobby depicting the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. A status of Florence Nightingale by FAP [Federal Art Project] sculptor David Edstrom honors the founder of professional nursing.” (Guide.)

My sister, Marcia Barkan Aitken) and I are trying to locate the records of our great aunt, Florence (nee Leibu/Lebowitz) Freidman who was a resident of Laguna Honda in the 1960s and/or 70s. We would appreciate your directing us to the correct office or agency we should contact. We are hoping the records might contain some information about her place of birth in Romania, exact date of birth and any other information that could help us trace our family history. Aunt Florence’s older sister, Bessie Grow, and niece and nephew-in-law, Pauline and Milton Barkan, maintained contact with her. Please let us know if you can help us ,or suggest someone else who might be able to. All of our efforts have hit a brick wall.
Thank you very much,
Judy Barkan Bantz, born and raised in S.F. but now living in Boise, ID and unable to visit in person.
Have you tried contacting the SF Hall of Records and the County Clerk? The folks there might be better able to direct your search, if they don’t have the relevant information themselves. Good luck with your search and please keep us posted!
